The new friendly face of drones, transporting your blood by air.
Viewed as semiotic signs, drones do not have a brilliant image. They’re a bit like large insects: black, noisy, flying around unpredictably. They’re potentially intrusive and a bit scary. But here’s a version that’s very different semiotically. These new NHS drones are like a cross between ambulances and miniature British Airways planes.
Read more about the semiotics of drones in new book “Using Semiotics in Retail”, featuring an Amazon warehouse that’s shaped like a beehive.
“’Where have I seen this before?’ is a question perfectly anticipated by calling the Amazon building ‘a beehive’. Even though the building is quite radical, even by the standards of industrial architecture, which can sometimes seem outlandish to the lay person, a beehive is something familiar, even cosy. It even makes drones seem nicer – bees are hard workers, they’re eco-friendly and not a nuisance to humans. This metaphor highlights the wholesome, beautiful and creative aspects of the building.”
